Behind the Scenes: Our Model Railway in a Professional Production

Last month, our store was completely taken over by cameras, lighting, crew members and… our model railway. It was a special experience, as production company 10 out of 10 Productions visited us to film various shots of our model railway for a major commercial production.

And it was a day we won't soon forget.

From model railway exhibition to film set

It all started during the model railway exhibition in Rijswijk. That's where the production team first heard about our model railway and especially about the amount of detail, atmosphere, and realism incorporated into it.

After visiting several model railways in the Netherlands, they eventually came to us.

When they saw our layout in person, they were immediately enthusiastic. Almost immediately, it was decided that our model railway would be used as the set for the production.

Fast forward two weeks later…

At 7:00 AM, a complete production crew from Amsterdam arrived at our premises. Large trucks full of equipment were parked outside, and material was being unloaded everywhere. Even municipal permits had been arranged for the recordings.

The 10 out of 10 Productions team consisted of approximately 30 people, including:

• Producers
• Co-producers
• Directors
• Production managers
• Logistics crew
• Lighting and sound technicians
• Camera operators
• Set builders
• Make-up artists
• And, of course, the actors

For one day, our store transformed into a real film set.

Final preparations for the model railway

Of course, we wanted everything to look perfect before the cameras started rolling. That's why, in the days leading up to the shoot, we were still busy with the model railway.

Extra lighting was installed, houses received new details, scenery was updated, and various parts of the layout got subtle touch-ups.

A long, but special day

Throughout the day, shots were taken of different parts of the layout. Cameras moved along the trains, close-ups were made of scenery and lighting, and multiple scenes were re-recorded repeatedly to get the perfect shot.

Behind the scenes, there was also a hive of activity. From make-up to lighting adjustments and from cable management to director's consultations — something was happening everywhere.

Almost everyone from our own team was present. The entire Miniature Project and Miniature Trainstore team was there to help where needed and, of course, to experience this special event.

The end result: Model Building Meets Film Production

What made this day so special was the moment two worlds came together: model building and professional video production.

Our model railway, which represents months of work, creativity, and passion, suddenly became part of a professional production environment. It was wonderful to see how much attention was paid to details, lighting, and atmosphere — exactly as we do ourselves in model building.

After a long day of filming, the work was done. Tired, but incredibly proud, we looked back on a special experience where our store and model railway truly came to life.

And honestly: the end result is beautiful.
