Diesel locomotive 309 “Sik” formerly of the Dutch Railways in yellow/grey livery as a private locomotive.

The Dutch Railways purchased the two-axle shunting diesel locomotives from the manufacturer Werkspoor between 1934 and 1951, and a series was also supplied by CW Zwolle. A total of 169 units were built, in various series and slightly different versions. Due to their characteristic exhaust sound, they became known among railway workers and railway enthusiasts as “Sikken” or “Sik” – singular for “goat”.
Fifteen of these machines were equipped with cranes in the 1970s. After the original green livery, the yellow-grey livery was later applied. The hard-working animals were tirelessly at work all over the Netherlands. In the second half of the 1990s, stricter health and safety regulations led to the remaining locomotives being taken out of service. Many of them have been preserved or are still in use by heritage railways and some private railway companies.
