Some information about prototype and model

At the end of the 1940s, the Deutsche Reichsbahn had a fragmented locomotive fleet, which, due to obsolescence and poor condition, did not allow for economical train operations. This situation applied particularly to branch lines. On this basis, the DR l commissioned LEW Hennigsdorf in 1950 to develop a modern steam locomotive for branch lines. However, another 5 years would pass before the prototype of the new BR 83 10 was delivered. Already during the test runs, design flaws and problems in production quality became apparent. However, since the delivery of the series locomotives began shortly thereafter, not all desired changes could be implemented. By October 1955, 25 machines were put into service and stationed in the Halle/Saale and Magdeburg directorates. When used in their core area, the machine service on branch lines, the 83 10 often convinced with impressive running performance, very good acceleration and smooth running. The idea of reducing downtime in repair shops through large stocks can also be considered successful. The interesting design, which proved to be absolutely better than its reputation in operational service, marked an important milestone in the history of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. In 1972, the last examples were taken out of service.

The 83.10 from PIKO is a further new-design steam locomotive. It is therefore already the second steam locomotive in the PIKO Expert series. As an optical eye-catcher, the 83.10 features various attached parts, such as many fine pipes, wind deflectors, bell, whistle, covers on the water tanks, dynamo, steps to the buffer beam, ladders, handrails, heating pipes and sand pipes. The complex rod drive of the locomotive, made of metal, has been lovingly recreated. Flawless spoked wheels create joy at the sight of it. Even when stationary, the BR 83.10 is an eye-catcher.
The strong motor with 2 built-in traction tires ensures sufficient drive. Analog models can be playfully digitized via a PluX22 interface. Subsequent installation of sound is also prepared. In addition, two sound versions and an AC version will be released, which are already equipped with an mfx-compatible decoder ex works.

Inside, the BR 83.10 from PIKO not only carries proven technology but also provides views into the cab, with simulated interior. This can be digitally illuminated. The same applies to the running gear. For even more realism, the DC and AC versions in sound execution with a factory-installed smoke generator.

With the 83 10, PIKO offers a much-desired model for the first time in large series in the well-known PIKO quality.

The 83.10 from PIKO should have its well-deserved fan base from the start. For friends of steam traction, the model is indispensable. In the Era IV version, the new locomotive remains versatile and can be ideally supplemented with the already existing rolling stock of coaches and wagons.
