Throughout railway history, numerous attempts have been made to equip locomotives with snowplow blades. However, these devices generally failed even at snow depths of 40 cm. The true breakthrough came only with the Austrian railwayman Rudolf Klima, who designed the snowplows named after him. Thanks to adjustable clearing shears and movable side wings, these plows could effectively clear snow depths of up to 1.50 m. The Deutsche Reichsbahn purchased the first Klima plows in 1929. The Henschel company from Kassel acquired the rights to reproduce them in 1931. Of the 250 units built in various designs, the DB acquired approximately 100. Even more Klima snowplows were purchased until 1964.
