      About the locomotive

Entering a new era with the Re 4/4 - In 1947, a new generation of locomotives appeared on Swiss rails. With the purchase of the Re 4/4 I, the Swiss Federal Railways were able to completely overhaul their rail transport concept. The bogie-based locomotive, which lacked pilot axles and had a top speed of 125 km/h (78 mph), allowed for significantly shorter travel times. To this day, it is considered a milestone in the history of Swiss locomotive construction. The nimble machine, remarkably light with a service weight of only 57 t, mastered its service life exceptionally well. It ushered in a new era in SBB rail transport with the transition from heavy, slow express train service to fast urban connections with short stopping times. With their 1855 kW (2520 hp) output, these machines were extremely versatile and, with their push-pull and multiple unit control, were suitable for both efficient shuttle train use and multiple unit operation. The excellent acceleration of the locomotives equipped with electric resistance brakes made them the ideal combination with the comfortable SBB Leichstahl carriages. These carriages long defined the image of passenger train service on Swiss interurban lines.
