For the enthusiast:
Unforgettable powerhouse for the branch line. Experience with the single-motor railbuses of the VT 95 series (later BR 795) developed by Waggonfabrik Uerdingen demonstrated the fundamental suitability of these vehicles for the urgently needed modernization of branch line traffic. However, their motorization proved to be insufficient, especially on lines with grades, when used with trailers. Therefore, just a year later, three prototype railbuses of the VT 98.9 series (later BR 798.9), equipped with two 150 hp (110 kW) Büssing motors, followed. These more than met the expectations placed upon them. The three test vehicles still featured Scharfenberg center couplings and lightweight brackets with shock springs to protect against contact with vehicles with standard buffers. Delivery of the twin-motor standard railbuses of the 98.95 series (later BR 798.5) began in 1955. Unlike the test units, 329 of these vehicles were equipped with newly developed running gear with improved running characteristics and screw couplings, sleeve buffers, and a standard brake system. This allowed the powerfully powered railcars to tow interchangeable freight cars if necessary. Furthermore, the VT 98 had a multi-unit control system, which allowed not only push-pull operation but also the coupling of an additional power car at the opposite end of the train. Matching control cars (VS 98) and trailers (VM 98) were also placed into service for this railcar. The purple-red liveries quickly became a defining feature on German branch lines, quickly replacing the previously steam-hauled trains. The Uerdingen railbus sets were forever etched in the memory of many rail travelers: for decades, the red mopeds were synonymous with mobility in rural regions. The hearts of many train users today still go out to these popular "saviors of the sidelines" as they did when they were first put into service.
