A touch of the Côte d'Azur
'Ligure', 'Mistral', and 'Train Bleu'. For decades, these luxury trains transported the wealthy and distinguished to the Côte d'Azur. In the 1970s, a locomotive model made its debut on the SNCF's railways that, thanks to its superb technology and extravagant appearance, made history. Designed by Paul Arzens, the model earned the nickname "Nez Cassé" (Broken Nose) not only from railway personnel due to its unusual front end. It was an almost revolutionary departure from the then-standard design with a square locomotive body. However, the BB 22200 type therefore perfectly complemented the distinctive character of the world-famous Côte d'Azur. Moreover, its multi-system technology allowed the BB 22200 to be deployed throughout France. This, for example, enabled continuous service on the legendary night train "Train Bleu," running from Paris via Nice to Ventimiglia. Until the arrival of the TGV high-speed trains, these 205 BB 22200 locomotives were considered the stars among the SNCF's locomotives. Today, many units still perform ordinary regional and freight train services. Their exceptional performance is therefore a thing of the past in regular operation. But the Märklin miniature model recalls the time when the "Nez Cassé" caused a sensation not only on the blue Mediterranean.
