Between 1863 and 1871, Maffei delivered 107 B-coupled locomotives with a leading axle to the Bavarian State Railways. Technically, the B VI differed only slightly from its predecessor series, the B V. The diameter of the coupled wheel increased from 1462 to 1616 mm, the service weight by one to 31 t. Like its predecessor, the B VI could be fired with both coal and peat. After the installation of replacement boilers, the permitted steam pressure increased from eight to ten bar. In regular service, the B VI mainly pulled passenger trains. It was soon displaced to lower services by faster locomotives. As early as 1895, it was taken out of service and continued into the 1920s. Two machines, which were used as construction trains, were included in the provisional numbering scheme of the Reichsbahn as 34 7461 and 7362, and were taken out of service shortly after the new numbering came into effect in 1925. One machine, the 316, made railway history. The locomotive, named "Tristan", pulled the court train of Ludwig II when His Majesty went on a journey.
