About the locomotive
From Germany to the SBB - The heavy diesel locomotives of the V 200 series (later BR 220) purchased by the Deutsche Bundesbahn in the 1950s were taken out of service at the end of the 1980s and some were sold. On the one hand, the increasing overhead line requirements of the DB network had reduced the need for diesel locomotives and on the other hand, the maintenance costs of these first large German diesel locomotives with their two separate drive units were too high by today's standards. Many of these machines were therefore sold to private German companies and abroad. The SBB also acquired 7 of these large diesel locomotives from the DB and included them in its traction vehicle fleet as the Am 4/4 from 1987/88. These machines were needed in Switzerland for extensive line renovation work for material transport. Since such construction projects do not have functional overhead lines available, the SBB was dependent on powerful diesel locomotives, of which there were not enough in Switzerland. Because the locomotives were also used at night in the railway construction service, the former DB flagship locomotives were basically decommissioned and equipped with extensive soundproofing of the engine in order to minimize the noise pollution of the local residents. A few years later, after their use in railway construction, the Am 4/4 returned to Germany to brokers in railway material.
