About the locomotive - for the enthusiast

E 40 – Backbone for freight train service. The BR E 40/140 also originated from the new acquisition program of the 1950s. Technically, the BR E 40 is a BR E 10.1 modified for freight train service. It has the same locomotive body, almost the same mechanics and electronics, but differs in some characteristics from its faster sisters. The BR E 40 has no electric brake, a different gear ratio, resulting in a lower maximum speed, and a different roof hood with fewer ventilator grilles. For the livery of the locomotive, the classic chrome oxide green was chosen; the elegant blue was reserved only for express train locomotives. The BR E 40, classified as BR 140 from 1968, was intended for medium-heavy freight train service, but it also served other duties, especially when the maximum speed was increased from 100 km/h to 110 km/h. It was therefore also found with Silberlingen and during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich also in S-Bahn service. However, its main task remained freight train service to this day. Like all other locomotives, the BR E 40/140 underwent modernization measures, and not only through different color schemes did the appearance of the locomotives change significantly. 31 locomotives of the E 40 series were specially equipped with a DC resistance brake for use on steep gradients, such as the Höllentalbahn. They were classified as BR E 40.11, from 1968 as BR 139. Later, the remaining locomotives of the BR 139 were concentrated in Munich, from where they were used up to the Brenner Pass, also together with BR 140 locomotives. The E 40/140 series, with its sub-variants, is the most built variant of the standard locomotive program of the young Deutsche Bundesbahn. 879 units were primarily responsible for medium-heavy freight train service for decades, but their decommissioning is expected for some locomotives in the foreseeable future or has already occurred.
