About the locomotive:

ALCO PA Many things that are now a thing of the past can be remembered for a long time. This is especially true for the locomotive of the type PA of the American Locomotive Company (ALCO). The designation means "Passenger A-Unit" and stands for a passenger train locomotive with a cab. The machine was introduced in 1946 and proved to be a great success with the new luxury express trains. Although a competing locomotive factory sold more comparable locomotives in total, the sporty, powerful design and the modern, powerful technology of the PA were particularly appreciated by the staff and passengers. The PA was used on almost all main lines in the United States. They were present in large numbers, especially in the southwest of the country. The brilliant yellow machines of the Union Pacific and the classic silver and red livery of the Santa Fe were very well known here, but also the "Daylight" version of the Southern Pacific in orange and red. In the southeast of the USA, the dark green PAs of the Southern Railway pulled the express train "Pelican". In the northeast, the elegant gray colors of the PA of the New York Central formed a closed image with the suitably painted "Streamliners". In combination with the color scheme of the "Name Trains", the trains with the big names, the striking, harmonious shape of the PA always formed an ideal combination of powerful technology and aesthetic design. The railway personnel preferred the PA because of its smooth driving characteristics and the safety that the long front and the rigid body provided. The rhythmic, full sound of the 4-stroke engine when pulling away is also considered incomparable among experts. The PA was given the title "Erestroomloc" because of the idiosyncratic character of the diesel engine ALCO 244 when started. Until the combustion was complete, the exhaust gave off a huge cloud of smoke, under which the locomotive thundered into motion. While the diesel locomotive type E of the Electro-Motive Division (General Motors) emerged from a development in the 1930s, the technology of the PA was determined as a new beginning by the post-war optimism for the future of express train traffic. During this time, the best express trains that had ever been seen in North America were built. In the 1950s, competition from the railways from outside grew. Passengers climbed into their own cars and into fast aircraft. The transport market had changed, the large express trains became rarer. With this development, the role of the PA locomotive also changed. As early as 1955, the Union Pacific had assigned the first locomotives of this series to freight traffic. Other railway companies followed suit. In this less popular service, one locomotive after another was inconspicuously taken out of service over the years, most of them falling victim to the cutting torch. Four locomotives from the Santa Fe were preserved and were even used again for the express train "Laurentian" by the Delaware & Hudson Company. After its demise, the locomotives survived again in Mexico, also for passenger trains. Thanks to the intervention of many railway enthusiasts, at least two locomotives could be saved from the scrapyard for Mexican museums after the expected end of the company. Two locomotives then underwent their time-consuming restoration in Portland/Oregon. One PA was painted in the red and silver colours of its original owner, the Santa Fe. It is to be exhibited in the museum of the Smithsonian Institution in the capital Washington. The other PA is technically in better condition and will wear the blue and silver livery of the Nickel Plate Road. This locomotive will receive a new diesel engine and new bogies and will be put back into production ready for special trips. In contrast, the Märklin model of the PA currently offers the opportunity to experience the elegant line of the beautiful locomotive in all its dimensions. The high-quality model technology now brings the pure stylistic experience of the power and dynamics of the great prototype.
