About the locomotive - for the enthusiast

NAfter the successful introduction of the Vectron Dual Mode, German freight transport also put it into service. In September 2020, even before the Federal Railway Authority officially announced the approval, decisions were already being made. At DB Cargo, buyers immediately put their words into action, and the first major order was placed with Siemens Mobility with a framework agreement for the delivery of up to 400 hybrid locomotives. Initially, DB's freight division ordered 100 units of the 249 series. This is more or less a "248 light" with slightly less power. The investment volume of the framework agreement amounts to more than one billion euros, according to a statement by the railway company. With such a large order, special attention is paid to customer wishes, and the machines are delivered 'with specific adaptations to the applications planned by DB Cargo'. The 100 locomotives on firm order are to be delivered as early as 2023. At DB Cargo, they are looking forward to the new ones, because they fit well into the strategy of becoming "big, green, and efficient". According to DB Cargo, this underscores the environmental friendliness of the railway, which the figures prove, as the savings potential of the hybrid locomotives from the current order amounts to approximately eight million liters of fuel and 17,000 tons of CO2 per year. Maintenance costs are also lower than for pure diesel locomotives. At InnoTrans 2022 in Berlin, it was possible to view one of the first Vectron Dual Mode light trains built for DB Cargo: The new type designation 249 was also chosen because there are numerous changes compared to the machines delivered so far. For example, the 249 gets a shunting platform at the front and folding shunting couplers. This has made it a bit longer again, now measuring 20,500 millimeters over the buffers, compared to the 248 series with its 19,980 millimeters. The power has been reduced to 1,120 kilowatts for the diesel engine, while the electrical power has been slightly increased and is now 2,200 kilowatts. The diesel tank is now smaller, reducing the axle load to 21 tons and allowing the locomotive to be used on secondary lines. Thanks to radio control, the 249 is also very suitable for shunting tasks, as the driver can also control his vehicle from outside. The top speed is now 120 km/h compared to 160 km/h for the 248 type. DB Cargo also plans to use the new locomotives in shunting service as a replacement for the already quite old diesel locomotives of type 290. In view of a new climate policy and the expected increase in rail traffic, DB Cargo is certainly well positioned with the Vectron Dual Mode light. It will be interesting to see how the machine proves itself in heavy daily use and whether railway companies abroad will also allow it on their lines. In any case, the prospects are not bad.
