About the locomotive:

The world record steam locomotive. With its express diesel railcar service, the DRG only covers a small, exclusive market segment in long-distance service. For the time being, locomotive-hauled trains form the backbone of the industry. They offer significantly greater capacity, space, comfort, and service, for example, with dining and sleeping cars. But the trains also require greater speed. The locomotive industry developed proposals for a steam locomotive capable of 175 km/h. The DRG decided on a three-cylinder unit with a 2'C2' wheel arrangement and coal firing. Its external dimensions were impressive: the driving wheels had a diameter of 2.30 m, the boiler pipes were 7 m long, and the power reached 2360 hp. Between Hamburg and Berlin, road number 05 002 achieved the still-standing world speed record for steam locomotives during a test run on May 11, 1936, at 200.4 km/h. The fact that this value was never surpassed demonstrates the limits of this technology. The enormous swinging masses of the cylinders, drive rods, and connecting rods no longer allow higher speeds. To keep the enormous boiler steaming, the stoker performs at top speeds. With their red streamlined cladding, the two machines, built in 1935, have a futuristic appearance. As a status symbol of the DRG, they are used in express traffic and temporarily wear the Olympic rings.
