About the train - for the interested reader:
In the mid-1930s, the steam locomotive faced competition: fast diesel railcars were deployed in high-quality long-distance service. The steam locomotive industry therefore developed high-performance locomotives capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h. For service between Berlin and Dresden, the Reichsbahn even purchased an entire train. This train was hauled by a class 61 locomotive. Henschel developed two types of this class, each with a very different design. 61 001 had a 2-'C2' wheel arrangement and a two-cylinder drivetrain. 61 002, built in 1939, had a trailing axle and an additional cylinder. Naturally, both locomotives had streamlined cladding. While other streamlined locomotives pulled conventional trains, the Reichsbahn also commissioned streamlined carriages specifically for express service between Berlin and Dresden. These came from the Wegmann company, which, like Henschel, was based in Kassel. Interestingly, the train didn't have a single first-class carriage. According to the press, second class is just as comfortable as first class. The designation "salon carriage" was therefore justified. The first and last carriages both featured a rounded front with large panoramic windows. Passengers in the latter carriage thus had an excellent view of the route and all around. With the introduction of the summer timetable of 1936, the Reichsbahn began express service between the capitals of Prussia and Saxony. Two pairs of trains ran daily. The fastest train covered this route in 1 hour and 40 minutes, 28 minutes faster than the then record holder. However, in the afternoon, the turning time between the D 54 and D 57 was very tight, at only 32 minutes. The Reichsbahn also had to constantly consider that the spare locomotives from other series couldn't reach the top speed of the D 61. When this locomotive was out of service due to regular or additional maintenance, the Dresden Class 01 or 03 took over. However, instead of 175 km/h (109 mph), they only reached 130 to 140 km/h (81 to 87 mph). Therefore, the Reichsbahn (State Railway) soon after introduced some flexibility in the timetables. With the start of the war, express passenger service came to an end. The carriages were now used for the military; the locomotives were mostly idle. At the end of the war, road number 61 001 remained in the British zone. As early as 1951, it was decommissioned as a "Splittergattung" (a residual stock), decommissioned in 1952, and dismantled in 1957. Road number 61 002 ended up with the Reichsbahn in the Soviet zone. From Dresden, it hauled passenger and freight trains. After the locomotive was rejected in 1958, the main frame, the leading wheels and the coupled wheels were retained in the express train locomotive 18 201.
